Fractals is a large symphonic band piece written in the style of that great tradition, but with twists. It was commissioned by the University of Binghamton Symphonic Band, Binghamton, NY - Mr. Daniel Fabricius, Director. It is a single movement work that has four distinct sections, all of whose genesis come from a brass chorale (second section) which begins with low brass and horns, continues to woodwinds, and eventually is developed throughout the ensemble. The first two phrases of the chorale provide all of the melodic material for Fractals which is developed in many varied and unique ways. These include asymmetric meters and multi-metric sections. If this piece were written thirty years ago, it would most likely have been titled Intrata, Chorale, Capriccio, & Finale. The 21st century title of Fractals was chosen as it is defined as: “A curve or geometric figure, each part of which has the same statistical character as the whole. Fractals are useful in modeling … in which similar patterns recur at progressively smaller scales, and in describing partly random or chaotic phenomena such as crystal growth, fluid turbulence, and galaxy formation.”* The title seemed very appropriate, as even though each section has different rhythmic, metric, and harmonic treatments, the notes of the melody have the “same statistical character (order) as the whole” used in smaller fragments.

This work represents a big step in my band composition work, being a large sophisticated work with a more focused intent in thematic development. Writing for the excellent Binghamton University Symphonic Band and their great conductor Dan Fabricius certainly helped, as I was free to just write what I had in my “mind’s ears” and not worry about difficulty level. Dan was an amazing collaborator, whose input at each stage of the project was extremely valuable, and helped bring this work to a higher level of artistic expression.
